When Darkness Strikes: Finding Light in a Broken World

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”John 1:5

The Weight of This Moment

This past week has left many of us stunned, grieved, and searching for words. The murder of Iryna Zarutska, a young Ukrainian refugee who fled war only to face senseless violence here in America, has broken hearts across the nation. The assassination of Charlie Kirk, a public voice for conservative values and a professing Christian, has shaken both political and faith communities. Around the world, similar stories surface daily—Christians persecuted, families torn apart, societies polarized.

It feels heavy, doesn’t it? We wonder: Where is God in all of this? How do we live, lead, and build Kingdom businesses when darkness presses so fiercely?

The truth is: God has never promised us freedom from trouble. Jesus Himself said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Today, let’s reflect deeply—not just on the tragedies—but on the greater truth: what the enemy intends for evil, God will turn for good (Genesis 50:20).

1. Remembering the Reality of Evil

We can’t deny what is happening around us. Scripture is clear: the world lies under the influence of the evil one (1 John 5:19). Violence, corruption, betrayal, and oppression aren’t anomalies—they are symptoms of a fallen world.

But evil’s reality doesn’t mean evil’s victory. History testifies: every time darkness tried to destroy God’s people, the light only grew stronger.

  • Pharaoh tried to crush Israel—yet the Exodus became a testimony of God’s power.

  • Goliath tried to intimidate Israel—yet David’s courage became a beacon of faith.

  • Rome crucified Christ—yet His resurrection became the cornerstone of salvation.

So when we see violence aimed at silencing truth-tellers or crushing the vulnerable, we remember: evil overplays its hand. Every attempt to intimidate the Kingdom has historically fueled revival, courage, and boldness.

2. Biblical Anchors for Our Time

Let’s ground ourselves in the stories of Scripture that speak directly to what we’re witnessing.

Joseph: From Pit to Palace

Betrayed, sold, imprisoned—yet every injustice positioned Joseph for God’s plan. In the end, he declared: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20)

Lesson for us: Even when evil strikes, God is orchestrating redemption. What looks like loss can become legacy.

Esther: For Such a Time as This

A Jewish orphan, suddenly queen, facing genocide. Esther risked everything to intercede for her people. Mordecai reminded her: “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)

Lesson for us: Our positions, businesses, influence, and platforms are not accidents. They are assignments.

Jesus: The Cross and Resurrection

The greatest injustice in history was Christ crucified. Yet that very act became the foundation of eternal life.

Lesson for us: God does His greatest work through what looks like defeat. Resurrection always follows crucifixion.

3. How Should Kingdom Builders Respond?

When tragedy shakes the world, we don’t retreat—we reset. Here are four ways we, as Kingdom entrepreneurs and professionals, can respond.

1. Pray Bold Prayers

Prayer isn’t passive; it’s warfare. This is the time to pray not only for comfort but for revival. Pray for the families affected. Pray for leaders to rise with courage. Pray for God’s mercy on a nation reeling with division.

2. Live Unashamed

Now is not the time to dilute our faith. When others shrink back, we stand firm. Paul reminds us: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation.” (Romans 1:16)

3. Use Your Influence Wisely

God entrusted you with a platform—your business, your voice, your story. Use it. Speak with love, lead with integrity, invest in ways that bring light to your city. Influence isn’t about fame; it’s about faithfulness.

4. Be a Source of Hope

While the media spreads fear, we spread faith. While culture breeds division, we demonstrate unity. While hatred fuels cycles of violence, we show radical love.

4. Practical Ways to Live This Out

As Entrepreneurs

  • Dedicate part of your profits to causes that protect the vulnerable (refugees, widows, orphans).

  • Use your workplace as a sanctuary—where prayer, peace, and encouragement flow.

  • Mentor the next generation, especially young leaders who feel the weight of these times.

As Investors

  • Invest in ventures that don’t just create wealth, but create solutions (housing, mental health, sustainable energy, tech-for-good).

  • Use your capital to fund Kingdom projects that governments or institutions overlook.

As Families

  • Teach your children resilience and discernment. Help them understand the times but not be overcome by them.

  • Establish family prayer rhythms—remind them that faith is our anchor when the world feels unstable.

5. Scriptures for the Storm

  • Psalm 46:1-2“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…”

  • Isaiah 40:31“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…”

  • Romans 8:37“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

  • 2 Corinthians 4:8-9“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

A Prayer for This Hour

Father, our hearts are heavy. We mourn for Iryna, for Charlie, for every life taken unjustly. We grieve for a world that seems bent on tearing itself apart. Yet in the middle of sorrow, we cling to You.

We declare: darkness will not win. We believe You are turning tragedy into testimony, pain into purpose, mourning into dancing. Give us courage to stand, faith to endure, and wisdom to lead in love. Use us as Your vessels to bring light where it feels hopeless. Lord, let revival begin in our hearts, ripple through our businesses, and overflow into the nations.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Kingdom Challenge

This week, choose one way to respond:

  1. Pray — Dedicate intentional time each day to pray for revival in America and strength for believers worldwide.

  2. Give — Support a ministry or non-profit serving those impacted by violence and injustice.

  3. Speak — Share hope with someone who feels overwhelmed. Post scripture. Encourage a peer. Be the voice of light.

A Final Word

Friends, this is not the end. This is a shaking. The kingdom we belong to cannot be shaken (Hebrews 12:28). While nations rage, our King reigns.

Evil tried to silence a refugee, a leader, and countless believers across the globe. But as long as we breathe, we will not be silent. We will build, invest, lead, and love in ways that declare: Jesus is Lord.

So let’s live with courage. Let’s steward with faith. Let’s shine with hope.

Because in the end, light always wins.
